Today is my father's birthday. He would've been 72 today.

It's really hard to post on this subject because I didn't have the best relationship with my father. It's strange that growing up, I never called him "Dad". For some reason, I could never say it. It didn't sound right. Don't get me wrong, I love my father and in spite of past hurts and mistakes that were made on both sides, I hope that I will see him in Heaven.

He on the other hand, called me Pal. I was his buddy and I believe that he loved me but tried to live what he wanted his life to be through me.

I know that my father loved me and did his best in his own way. He did what he could to always provide for me and see to it that I never went without, but I miss the time that we didn't have, the times that we didn't do things.

All in all, the relationship with my father helped shape me into the person that I am today. I am deliberate at being involved in my childrens' lives because I have to be.

I thank God for His wonderful blessings and for healing the hurt that I had for my father, for without Jesus, I could only wonder what I would be like today.

Nevertheless, today is my father's birthday, and good or bad, I reflect on the man who loved me and whom I love.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Love,
Your Son

I am glad that you posted on this. I know how hard it is for you to do. Bringing up the past and feeling the hurt for remembering the what was instead of the what should have been or what could have been.

I know your dad loved you the only way he knew to, I also know it isn't the same love you have for your children.

You are a purposeful dedicated dad that has a mission in regards to these 4 little lives entrusted to you.
In each one of our children I see attributes of who you deliberately choose to be. I also believe that the things that have happened and didn't happen with your parents are a direct result of who you are today.

Who you are is your parent's fault, who you become is your own!

In George I see a child becoming a man. A teenager who really wants to be like his Dad. I also see the drive for leadership and resposibility for who he is most times :).A love of reading. He has huge character qualities that will make him a strong man and father one day, not a copy of you, but the example of you.

In Megan I see the desire for things to be done and done the way that would best please everyone. A young lady trying to find peace within her role of who she is in this family. She is loving and nurturing and already feels the weight of resposibilty

In Matthew I see the determination to be better than just the average person. I see empathy. This is your son who wants everyone to know the God that saved him can also save them. He is the lover of all things, except his room :)

In Juliana I see a bit of stubborn attitude. I child that is going to do it her way. A little girl that doesn't take the path of least resistance.

In each of your children they march to a different beat. The song originally provided by their father. You are exactly who God wants you to be.

I found a quote sometime ago and I have blogged it and I have wrote it to and said it to so many people because the meaning is so very strong.
"God made you an original, don't die a copy."

That quote is so perfect for you and who your father was. God shaped you to be a dad with purpose and intent. I can say you are never a follower. Thankfully you found peace with your heavenly Father, so you could find peace with your task here with us.

I can't imagine living life with someone other than you.
I love you
Di

Thank you for the wonderful comments and insight. You have more wisdom that you'll ever know.

Thank you for your support and in helping me through the diffcult mental and emotional times.

Thank you for your encouragement to move me past my "hangups" and to be the father that God wants me to be

Thank you for enduring "my parents" and all of the baggage that came with that.

You are a great mom and awesome wife!

God has truely blessed me with you!

I love and appreciate you!

Love Always,
George

You know I always hear that saying that "God gives us only what we can handle."

I think it is true to a certain extent. Even though you went through very bad times in a very short time and your plate was often full when more stuff weighed you down. I believe God puts people in our paths for a reason.

Sometimes it is to let someone walk infront of you to pull you thru, or maybe someone behind you to hold you up, or someone to walk along side us just incase we feel like we want to stop.

I will add that it was hard to watch you as you let your self think about and type about this.

That's why I waited to read it until today.
